Run far and fish DEEP

This month has been great for the long distance trips. We have seen some of the greatest action with red and mangrove snapper. Well offshore the snapper have been following baits and amberjack all the way to the surface in depths as deep as 175 feet. In the last few years I have not seen such exciting fish action. When the fish move this close to the boat we keep them close with chum and catch the snapper on light tackle spinning rods. You can't ask for a better snapper fight!

Also, blackfin tuna has been a standard on our full day and longer charters. Almost every trip has seen a tuna or bonito on the line. These fish range in size from 10-30 pounds. The tuna are a great fight, in fact one angler fought a 25lb. blackfin for about 40 minutes. The bonito are less of a fight but still a good pull. However, they don't have the meat quality of the blackfin.

Grouper has been a success for the reds and work for the blacks. With the sizzling summer heat red grouper are chewing all day on the limestone bottom offshore. Usually only a few stops will yield a limit of them. Recently we had a near boat record of a 28 pound red caught in only 130 feet of water. The fish are most definitely out there! In regards to the black grouper, it has been work to get them on the hook. They tend to feed only a few times each day and are picky of the meal at that. Aa big live bait has been the choice to bring the "reef tamer" to the boat.

Near shore fishing has still been hot with barracuda, spanish mackerel, and sharks. The fish have been hitting live baits trolled across the local wrecks in 40 to 60 feet of water. Occasionally a cobia or mahi stops by the boat and doesn't get far. We have seen legal cobia in as close as 40 feet and mahis in the same depth. A frequent catch lately near the beach has been baby king mackerel which is an indicator of great times to come this fall when they grow up.

With our 2006 32 foot Sabalo the run to these fish 50 miles offshore is a breeze. The weather is calm and the seas are flat. Our boat rides comfortably with plenty of open shaded seating for six anglers. No matter how far offshore, we can take you there!
